Basic How-to
Exporting
  • Access your CAEDM J Drive on your research computer

    • Open File Explorer on PC
    • Right click "This PC" (Windows 10) or "My Computer" (Windows 7) and select "Map Network Drive...".
    • Select j: as the drive in the "Drive" box.
    • Type in the "Folder" box \\fs-caedm.et.byu.edu\YOURCAEDMUSERNAME
    • Select "Connect using a different user name".
    • Enter CAEDM credentials and have it remember you
    • Click "OK" and then "Finished"
  • Email Dr. Hawkins to get added to “ARROW” and “Mask” groups on CAEDM. In the meantime, download and install the following programs from the internet (both can be downloaded online for free):

    • Xming (prob 64 bit).
    • PuTTY (prob 64 bit)
  • Add Requisite Files to J: Drive

    • Download the following: cadence_setup.zip
    • Unzip the folder and place its contents in your J Drive home directory (a folder named “cadence”, and three files: cshrc, bashrc, cds.lib). Put its contents in the home directory, not the ‘cadence_setup’ folder itself.

  • Run Xming and then start PuTTY. (Xming usually just runs in the background. Will likely just pop up in utility bar at bottom-right corner of screen). Now configure and run Putty by doing the following:

    • In sub-window on the left, go to Connection->SSH->X11. Make sure that “Enable X11 forwarding” is enabled/checked
    • Return to main Session page. Host Name = ssh.et.byu.edu. Specify the connection type as SSH. Type a name in “Saved Sessions”. Click “Save”. From now on whenever you open putty you can just find the name and click “Load”.
    • When ready, click “Open” to begin session.

  • Opening Cadence

    • Log in with CAEDM password
    • Type “cd cadence” and press ENTER. This changes to your cadence directory
    • Type “cadence” and press ENTER. This should open the Cadence Library manager. Most masks of interest are in the ‘arrow’ library.

Troubleshooting

  • Sometimes the "ssh.et.byu.edu" host doesn't work correctly. If you are able to access your J-Drive but can't load Cadence, this may be the problem. One workaround is to connect to a particular CAEDM lab computer such as "onion.ee.byu.edu" or "thyme.ee.byu.edu". All the other settings should stay the same (X11 forwarding enabled).
  • Access your CAEDM J Drive on your mac

    • Open finder
    • Click on “Go”
    • At the bottom of the pop-down list click “Connect to Server…”
    • Type in “smb://fs-caedm.et.byu.edu/<CAEDM_USERNAME>”
    • Click connect
    • Sign in with your CAEDM username and password

  • Email Dr. Hawkins to get added to “Arrow” and “Mask” groups on CAEDM
  • In the meantime, download and install XQuartz

  • Add Requisite Files to J: Drive

    • Download the following: cadence_setup.zip
    • Unzip the folder and put its contents into your J Drive home directory (a folder named “cadence”, and three files: cshrc, bashrc, cds.lib). Put its contents in the home directory, not the ‘cadence_setup’ folder itself.

  • Open Up Mac Terminal

    • ssh into CAEDM computer using one of two methods
    • Method 1:

      • Type in the command: “ssh <CAEDM_USERNAME>@ssh.et.byu.edu -X”
      • Sign in with your username
    • Method 2: (ssh into a specific CAEDM Linux machine)

      • Type in the command: “ssh <CAEDM_USERNAME>@thyme.ee.byu.edu -X
      • Sign in with your username
      • Instead of “thyme” you can ssh into a different machine by using other names such as rosemary, onion, cumin, parsley, nutmeg, ginger, saffron, paprika, allspice, marjoram, bayleaf (pretty much any spice name haha)
    • NOTE: Method 1 hasn’t been working lately so maybe try Method 2 first.
  • Navigate into cadence folder by typing in the command “cd cadence”
  • Run cadence by typing in “cadence”

To begin exporting a mask design, find the Small Virtuoso window and choose File->Export->Stream

Export_gds.PNG

This opens up an output stream setting box. Click on the folder icon on the far right of the Library line and browse for the Mask design you wish to export.

Stream out file select.PNG

Now name the .gds file to something you can remember and associate with the specific mask versions you care about. Select the "arrow" Technology Library from the dropdown list. If you forget this step the layers will be undefined when you export. Click apply.

StreamOut_settings.PNG

Your .gds file should now be in your J-Drive>Cadence folder. The folder should also include a Layermap text file that contains a list of all the mask layers in the .gds you just exported.

Files of Interest.PNG

Open the LayerMap file and look for the layer that contains the mask design you want to send to the maskwriter. Find the number beside that layer and remember it.

LayerMap.PNG

Now copy your .gds file onto a flashdrive and go talk to Joe Bussio. He can get you setup with the maskwriter. Be sure to remember the layer number though otherwise the process takes forever and neither of you will be happy campers.
